Disaster has struck the UNB Archives and Special Collections! A terrible fire has destroyed all of the incredible photographs, papers, and artifacts documenting UNB’s history!
But, wait! All is not lost. One hope remains.
A secret research project (codenamed AUDE - short for Augmented Universal Dimension Engine), the work of a small group of eccentric professors, has unraveled the mystery of time travel!

In this easy-to-learn but strategic card game, you and up to four friends compete against each other as the professors. Stepping forward with a plan to save the university’s history, you send your student research assistants leaping back in time to collect the artifacts and retake the photographs lost in the fire. Good luck! UNB is counting on you!
Project AUDE is the second tabletop game created by Resolve, an applied game design research group led by Dr. Scott Preston. Resolve designs games that educate, inform, engage, and change. We also work to increase awareness of the potential of tabletop games on campus and in our community. Our name refers to our determination to study how games work and apply this knowledge towards finding answers to problems, helping change the world around us. Resolve is committed to providing opportunities for experiential learning for UNB students and recent graduates. Since 2021, fifteen different students have been part of the research group via a mix of work-study positions, paid senior internships, course-credit internships, and practicums.
Project AUDE began in Fall 2022, a collaboration with UNB Archives & Special Collections. It was created to raise awareness of and promote the archives and special collections among UNB students, researchers, and alumni. The game was conceptualized and designed entirely by Dr. Preston and his students during the 2022-23 academic year. In the summer and fall of 2023, a team of six students, supervised by Dr. Preston, researched UNB’s history, worked with the archives to select and collect the images, and wrote the card descriptions. Graphic design and the initial print run of 1000 copies were completed in 2024. The game launched in January 2025.

Our game was made possible thanks to the generous support of many, but especially Susan Montague, Stephanie Slauenwhite, UNB President Emeritus John McLaughlin, Dean of Arts Peter Thompson, Dean of Libraries Lesley Balcom, Associate Dean of Libraries James MacKenzie, UNB Archivist Christine Lovelace and the team at Archives & Special Collections, the Alvin J. Shaw Trust, and Aggie Sliwka.
